Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is a federal holiday celebrated on June 19th. It commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed by Union troops that they were free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
