Dancing with the Lutherans

Well, we might not be stars, but we sure can have some fun!

Join the Congregational Life committee on Saturday May 1st for an evening of ballroom dance instruction at the Fruth Center from 6:00 to 10:30 pm. We have hired a dance instructor to teach us ballroom dancing that will consist of the Fox Trot and the Waltz. Sound like fun?!?!

There will be no mirrors and no videotaping but lots of fun and we can guarantee a lot of laughs. The other great thing about being Lutheran is that we are good at sharing, so this is for singles and for couples! This will be open to the adults and youth of our church and your invited guests.

The cost will be $5.00 per person and will be collected at the door. The social gathering will begin at 6:00 and then the dancing will begin at 7:00 pm. Beer & Wine will be sold for a nominal amount. We wouldn’t be true Lutherans if we didn’t break for coffee and dessert!

We would like to get a rough count of participants so please fill out a reservation form and drop it off at the church office or submit it electronically on the church website at www.firstevlutheran.org by Sunday April 25th. We are also asking that everyone bring either an appetizer or a dessert to share for the night.

If you have any questions about the event you can contact the church office, Jan Ingraham, Jeanne Govoni, Dana Christensen, or Amy Oman.

See you on the dance floor!

Reservation forms are available on the table opposite the chapel

An Easter Message from ELCA Presiding Bishop, Mark Hanson

The last enemy to be destroyed is death. --1 Corinthians 15:26

For a brief time, while the crucified Jesus lay in a borrowed tomb, it seemed as if death had triumphed once again.  Threatened by a messenger of God's expansive, steadfast love, yet another human mob succumbed to death's seduction. They chose its brutal, silencing power and trusted its empty finality.  Death's murderous rebellion against the Creator of life seemed unstoppable.

Until that Sunday morning dawned.  Mary, Joanna, Mary and the other women arrived at Jesus' tomb prepared for a body emptied of life.  Instead they discovered the grave emptied of its power and death itself buried in resurrection life.  Jesus Christ, the first fruits from the dead, lives! (1 Corinthians 15:20)

Now Jesus Christ, the embodiment of God's compassionate love, is preparing your body for a resurrection life.  In that life death can no longer imprison you in a grave nor hold you captive to its violent imagination and destructive power.  Joined to Christ by baptism, your body is being brought into his resurrected life, into Christ's new creation, and into the ministry of reconciliation and peace.  In this new day your resurrected service of God's steadfast love endures forever.

This is the Lord's doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
--Psalm 118:23-24

Lenten Luncheons are over for this year

We wish to thank Pat McAfee and Carolyn Giordano for their continued leadership in organizing these luncheons and to all of the ladies of the congregation who prepared, served and cleaned-up for these luncheons. We thank all those who made or donated pies as well. We averaged 50 or more people per luncheon. We look forward to the 2011 Lenten series of luncheons and the celebration of the 30th year of providing this ministry to the congregation and community. If you have any speakers that you would like to have considered for next year’s series please speak to Jim Benson.

College Care Packages

Beginning in March, the Martha Guild began collecting items for our college students in order that we may send them a Care Package in April. Items that students would like to snack on are most welcome. Some suggestions are peanut butter, crackers, candy, snack packs,  pretzels, Gold Fish, Pringles, cookies, microwave popcorn, Swedish fish, gum, or any other junk food.  Its not too late to drop off some snack food. There is a container in the hallway outside the office to receive items for these.

Are you a shutterbug?

If so we are looking for quality photographs to display on the walls of the newly renovated serving room to give it a feeling of warmth and beauty. Scenes of nature, landscapes, interesting buildings, etc. are most welcome. If you have photos that you would like to have displayed in the serving room you may provide an 8 x 10 print to Jim Benson along with a description of the photo. Depending upon how many photos we receive they will be rotated on a regular basis.

Census 2010

A reminder that it is important that you fill out and mail back your 2010 Census forms as soon as possible. This census is critical to how representation in the House of Representatives is determined as well as the amount of financial aid you city or town receives. First Lutheran has been a training center for census workers and is currently a Census 2010 help center through April 19.
